Off the Beaten Track: New Zealand
One of the most beautiful natural environs on earth with its varied micro-climates is New Zealand. Of course, this lends itself to the production of a diverse array of wines from the many species of grape that find a home there. Common varieties include: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Merlot.
And despite the expense of long distance delivery, some bargains can be found due to the underrated nature of this wine-producing region.
By the way, even if you scale the ladder higher, you're likely to find any bottle from New Zealand is sealed via screw-cap rather than cork, as this limits exposure to 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, which may impart a musty aroma and flavor to wine.
