As we've noted more than once, bargains can be had in undiscovered terrain. In other words, find a nation producing quality wine, but whose name is not Italy or France, and you'll probably be pleasantly surprised at what your wine dollar can buy.
Similarly, even in widely known and appreciated wine-producing nations, some areas trail in tradition, but not necessarily in quality.
Examples include Mendocino and Lodi counties in California, as well as the Columbia Valley in Washington State, where wonderful soil and weather combine to produce some lesser known gems like Castle Rock Pinot Noir.
