Root 1 Carmenere

In the 1800's, grape cuttings were imported to Chile from Bordeaux. The variety was thought to be Merlot. It took until 1994 to figure out the Chilean Merlot was actually Carménère. Today, the grape is nearly extinct in Bordeaux, making Carménère something nearly uniquely Chilean.

Root 1 Winery's Carménère , though not a top favorite, is an excellent example of the savory, medium-bodied wines made from Carménère and, like many Chilean wines, remains an undiscovered bargain for those in search of red wine value.
